Major Project Proposal

Intention, agenda, motivation.

I would like to continue with my explorations into an alternative approach to exhibition design. I would like to expand on this by designing a gallery and an exhibition together, outside of an existing gallery.

In taking the exhibition (and therefore gallery design) outside of the institution how does this begin to deconstruct the boundaries that are set up within the gallery. The body is set up to behave in a certain way within a gallery context. What happens if you take the exhibition outside of the gallery, do these behavioural constraints go away?

Context

Challenge conventional display placement, alter the way we approach and view art.

Disrupting the typical behaviours found in galleries. This approach to exhibition and gallery design aims to remove the stigma of the white cube.

Challenge the social and atmospheric conditions of the gallery through designing a exhibition that is held outside of the gallery institution.

Site and or situation

The design would revolve around a specific exhibition, located in a public area that isn’t controlled by an institution like a gallery, museum etc.

Designing a gallery for a specific exhibition.

Audience occupant demographic

  • Those who frequent galleries.

  • Those who do not frequent galleries due to not feeling comfortable (atmospheric conditions, social conditions and behaviour restraints)

  • People outside of the gallery who are curious to play in this new form of gallery.

Stakeholders’

  • Gallery owners.

  • Curators

  • and artists

Practice. Professionalism.

  • Responding to ethics surrounding using other artists work within my own design drawings and diagrams.

Design approach

  • Continue with drawings and collages to help design a schema.

  • Model making and assemblages.

  • 1:1 play with specific intervention to see how the body approaches and understands the given situation.
