THE KNOWING BODY

Body.

Connection.

Embodiment.

Inhabit.

Movement.

‘The Knowing Body’ is a collection of experimental design work, with the human body at its core. Founded on an interest in exploring how the body inhabits space, and therefore effects the atmosphere of a room, this body of research ask how we can design with more emphasis on the body’s needs. Through looking at how the body interprets space; we can also begin to understand how the body activates space. Asking what does an interior become without a body to inhabit it? This project is interested in using the body to engage a more attentive design practice.

The collection features film, photography, mapping, and model making to explore how we use our bodies and how our bodies interpret the environment around us. These investigations have been curated into three categories: Using the Body as a Site; Tool; and Medium. Through this body of research, it has become clear that the body isn’t passive to the space around it. The body can make interventions into the space, it can alter the atmosphere of a room. Our bodies are in a constant state of flux and so, by extension is interior design. We are containers for experience, how can we harness this into design?

Through using the body as a site, tool and a medium, are we then able to engage in a more attentive design practice?
